Recorder Karate

I am excited to try some new things with our recorder section of music class.  Currently our 30 minutes of class involves the following: 5 minutes to get in and get settled, 10 minute group discussion to review reading notes, fingerings, rhythms and whatever else I have noticed kids struggling with, then we spend 12 minutes passing off songs for those ready.  This is where things are just not running as smoothly as I would like.  I need to listen to those ready to pass off a song and the others are to be practicing songs so they can get it ready to pass off.  This is where I feel things are not very productive.  My attention has to be on the child trying to pass it off, and most kids are ok with practicing but there are quite a few that are wasting there time because they need my help and I am unable to help them because I can only work with 1 or 2 kids at a time.

I have come across a new idea that I think will be a win win for everyone.  I will be able to give everyone my attention, we will still have time to work on group things, and kids are not waiting in line to pass things off in class.

Everyone in class raised their hand when asked if there was a smartphone, ipad, and or computer in their household.  On this blog, I will put a listening track and sheet music for every level of recorder Karate.  When they have the song learned the song at a decent speed, with no more than 1 mistake, they can video themselves and send me a video message via email, through a parent email.  I then can watch it, and respond with comments or video myself playing a section with corrections and they can try again if needed.

The advantage of videos is they can restart as many times as they want until they get the perfect video.  I think it will be more productive for everyone's time.
There will be a link on the side bar for each level of Karate where you can find the listening track and the sheet music.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
